XXXV CURSET - JORNADES INTERNACIONALS SOBRE LA INTERVENCIÓ EN EL PATRIMONI ARQUITECTÒNIC

The history and the ports

In this thematic line there are included the aspects of ports linked to the history of their heritage, both of architectural and archaeological one.

Within each type of port and its period there are a series of buildings and architectural characteristics:

Docks for loading and unloading, Storage, Customs, Military, fishing establishments, Sales trade, Consulates, Shipyards, Terminals of passengers, Nautical centres, Baths and beaches, Industrial facilities, archaeological remains (static goods -buildings- and mobile -ships-), neighbourhoods and urban centres, bridge and promenades, cultural, commercial and leisure establishments.

Buildings of the port: function and uses through the history
What are the activities carried out and how these have evolved directly affecting the development of the town and the maritime areas, and the works built for that reason.

LLOTJA - Gabriele Pettinau

At this point, there will be analysed what buildings have historically the ports of our cities until the modern development before the 2nd World War. What features and role were developed before being abandoned?
Which ones still conserve their function and why they have survived?

The overseas colonies
We would like to mention the ports of the colonies of the European empires in America and Africa, and its relation to the development and the conquest of these continents, along with the dark aspects such as the slave trade. In these places there are traces of buildings devoted to this activity, and that in recent years have been turned into museums and other uses.

The Coastal Law and the heritage intervention, and the expansion of the city
In this section there will be analysed the current legislation on coasts and how this affects the built work and the intervention policies of restoration, like the uses that could be carried out once these buildings  would be transformed. How does the legal area intervene in other European ports?
